Choosing a carrier for your tiny baby

Choosing a carrier for your tiny baby

You’ve been surprised by an early arrival, or a small newborn that has everyone commenting on how tiny they are. There has been worry about weight gains, and perhaps separation while your baby has had to go to NICU or special care.

But now your heading home and would love to experience closeness and bonding through babywearing. However, your baby is too small for the big buckle carrier you picked up from the baby store.

Where do you go from here?

There are options for those babies under 3.2-3.5kg that most carriers are tested from. I do often find also that although the carrier says it can fit a baby that small, it can be really difficult to position a tiny baby safely. It’s a case of it’s not you, it’s the carrier just having too much space until babies have time for some more growth.

Check out the comparison table below to determine what features in a carrier are most important for you, and which small baby carrier is likely to suit you best.

*Baby does need to be medically stable and robust enough to tolerate handling. You also want to be sure you are nailing your technique to provide adequate support to a tiny little body.
